hey Luke, I would look at getting yourself a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) from CyberPower, Tripp Lite or APC.

they have back up battery power if power goes out and surge protection..usually 4 plugs for each and you can get these for about $50 from the likes of BestBuy or Staples.

Are your outlets GFCI? If not, use a GFCI power bar. GFCI is a must when using electricity around water.
I use Tripplite GFCI power bars. Love 'em.
Thinking of getting a Tripplite UPS, too.

I will have to get GFCI power bars because I'm on fuses as well. my apartment is from the late 40's.

Josh, do you know if the hardware used for tanks have any special requirements? for instance, most UPS have an artificial sine wave, which for many electronics isn't good anymore. that's one reason why I mentioned CyberPower because they have introduced several models with pure sine wave.

This what I have, well 2 one for plant tank and one for reef seems to work well. 2 yellow outlets are run by timer for lights and 2 blue are run by timmer but run in reverse so you can plug Sump light in are if you have Moon lights. Then there are 4 regular outlets. Pet Smart has them. I have them plugged into a power center like you would get for you TV Surround sound system.

While not a power bar I found this at Walmart a few weeks back and find it very useful.

With my Biocube came a pump with some hose for easier water changes. I hated bending down to unplug the pump every time so was looking for an extension with a switch. I didn't think I'd find one with a FOOT SWTICH! I'm thinking of getting another to connect the pump/powerhead from my Biocube to make it a simple one click for feeding time.

These are $10 at WalMart .... http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/woods-foot-switch-light-control/6000016948879. However it will only accept two-prong cords. Sorry to sidestep the thread here I just figured it was somewhat relevant to the topic. Carry on .... :D.

Have you replaced the back-up battery? If they start going buggy with their programming that's usually the cause. Assuming it's a digital programmable one.

I have to get one of these too. You never know when the power is out.

How can you tell how much equipment you can plug in an UPS, and how long it will last when the power is out?

For battery backup there's always the Coral Box Powercell as well.

Not sure if this would be as useful as the larger UPS but probably cheaper. From my understanding a single Jebao RW-4 will run for 48 hours on the lowest setting with this unit.

I am thinking of getting the cyberpower one. Do I need one with sine wave? Also, do you think 1500VA or 900 watts UPS is too much to run a 150 watts heater, skimmer, tank pump, ATO, heater controller, nanobox duo LED, and Ecotech powerhead?

I thought those were pretty much made so you could save and shut down your computer before the ups dies out??? For a quick power outage they seem great but figuring a day outage or more than a couple hours your still in trouble aren't you? As for power bar get one rated for outdoor use its a few dollars more but won't be affected by condensation. As for timers they are all cheap garbage unless it comes built in.
