Ok I need a consensus here... Shoukd I mix the water from my 55 with the newer water in the 135? Or mix 55 gallons if new water and start with all new water? Whatever I do it has to happen soon... I'm running sumpless right now...

ya just let it settle and mix it. or just drain it while stiring up your substrate to clean it. either or works. in an 8 month old system, there shouldnt be any actual toxic stuff in there. You will however get a little cycle just from stirring the substrate around if you had any anaerobic areas in your substrate. as that bacteria will die.

Shayneh, I dont use tap water. I have an rodi system that I use. However for this particular build I opted for 135 gallons of tap water cuz I wasn't about to pay for RO wTer in that volume. My RO system would take weeks to fill that thing. I treated it with dechlorinator and let it go for a week. Gonna run a Berlin system on the 135. Going with the KISS theory. Keep it simple stupid! Lol, skimmer n live rock. That's it.

I agree L.R, high flow in display, sump (for aesthetics and additional water capacity) and a good skimmer is the way to do it.

I personally would have spent the extra time to make up ro water just so you know that water quality isn't to blame if something starts going wonky (algae outbreak etc.).

80 gals of tap water is alot of pollutants soking into all your rock and sand

I filled my 55 with tap water the first time I started with base rock n sand. Had no problems. Figured this can't be diff

Although not the greatest method it should be fine....and hey it's already done! Just makes troubleshooting harder and the system has more pollutants to deal with immediately.

fishit does make a valid point about potential pollutants being soaked up/stored in the LR.....issues like longer cycle times, algae outbreaks, heavy metals leaching back into system, unexplained losses later can all possibly be attributed to this. All you can do is move on from here. Still looking forward to pics

Hey Karl when I upgraded from a 55 I put in as much o f that water as I could in to my new tank, a lot of good beneficial bacteria in there.
