I use the salt buckets for ATO, and I use a food grade olive barrel for RO/DI, never worried much about contamination, just rinsed them out in regular tap water.

I've only cleaned containers when I first get them to remove any residue from them, the only time I have had to clean a container was after it was sitting for a long period of time, it started to grow mold in it, but that was 10+ years ago. I haven't noticed any build up of stuff in my new setup.

Yeah once only. If I was worried about a container, I would fill it with 0TDS RO/DI water and then test the TDS after a month. One time I found that blue rubbermaid tubs actually leeched INSANE amounts of phosphate into my water. Had to find "white" tubs that were reef safe.
