So thismorning I wake up, get ready for. Work, about to head out the door and like everymorning I give the tank a quic look over. Its cloudy. ?????? Look at dosing pump and its running. Timer failed in on position. Tested alk and it was at 12.8. Question is is that the highest it should get or will anything that has percipitated(?) Out raise it more. Couldn't stay home today, important job to take care of at refinery. Gonna have to ride it out. Hope I don't come home to floating fish and a. Big gooey mess.

i've seen successful tanks running ALK at 11... dunno about 12.

Fish should be fine... SPS might take a hit though.

Had my drip on my ca reactor fail once. Pump just kept running. Alk spiked to 18 dkh. All coralline died. Rock went green. Ph dropped to 7.6. All harder to keep fish died (bariene tang, powder blue, mandarin) took me almost 2 months of regular water changes spaced out weekly to get levels back to acceptable range. Never turned my a reactor back on since. Sorry for the bad news. I would def take it offline (unless you did and I read this post wrong lmao). Currently my dkh sits around 11-12 calcium 460 and mag 1350. Ph is 8.0.

Yikes. That is definitely high. Water changes are needed to bring it back down. You just don't want to come down too fast either.

Lol. Wondering what I did do.....didn't sell mp40 cause I had car issues I needed to address, that sucked, bio warefare in tank, that sucked, overdosed last night, that sucked and now my brand new brs dosing pump is craped out which also sucks.

Fortunatly so far none of my corals are melting and polyps are coming out so there may be som hope yet. Its crazy the ammount of build up in my tank right now though. Glass, rocks, pumpsn evrything is white. Went to use mag float to clean glass and sounded like the glass was coated in sand.

OMG OMG......that sucks.  THIS IS MY TANKS ACHILLES HEAL.  I switch my timer out every year out of fear of this.

sorry to hear this.  ITs not so much the high alk but the fast swing.

thanks all. not sure what the max alk went to but when i tested this morning it went up to 12.8 on my red sea test kit. didn't have time to test for anything else. not sure what ph went to either. sucked that i had a meeting and scheduled for a critical job in the plants or i would have taken a "sick day". figured i would just have to ride out the storm and hope for the best.

As of right now it looks like i may have the golden horse shoe of bad luck jammed right up my fart box. Bad shit happened but the best possible turn out is what i got.

all fish and coral are still alive and doing really good, almost as if nothing had happened. i will have to remove all of my pumps and give them a thorough cleaning because of the build up but that shouldn't be a big deal. my brs reactor isnt working quite right but i will have to figure that out flow seems off even cleaning.

My skimmer overflowed and i think that the skim-mate may have made it back into the tank. will have to see how that goes also. just keep up on my water changes and do some heavy skimming

This morning really sucked, felt my heart fall through my butt-hole and jump right back up into my throat. tankfully up to this point it looks like catastrophe may have been averted. my alk is back down to 7.8

Your alk went down 5dkh in like 15 hours? I think that might cause a problem, that's a huge swing up and then back down in a short time.

That's what I was thinking but all looks good.  Same kinda thing happened when I double dosed a month or so ago. Only. Not quite as big of swing. For whatever reason my tank won't stay high in alk even with cal and mag in check. Not sure why

That's because your tank is established.......I have experienced the same results......high swings that level out quickly......you could not have dosed that much alk.....how much u figure?

It's not really like it dropped to about 8 again......it rose to 12 bcuz of overdosed alk which IMO could not have been a major major amount since everything seems ok.....the system just recovered from an abnormal alk/ph rise and this can happen easily within 24hrs.

Possible that Calcium Carbonate was precipitating out of solution from the overdose.  The suspended solids in your test sample could have made your test over-read.

Im figuring i dosed about 600ml of brs 2 part. assuming it was on from when I start dosing at 10pm to when i found it at 7 am. qty is roughly accurate from what is missing out of my one gallon brs jug.

Very good possibility, tested in am and it almost looked like a tank of skim milk. tested again at 4 and the water was clear.
