Well I thought that I would share my expereinces with IO salt and would be great if you guys and gals would too.

Yesterday I did a WC and checked alk and calcuim levels before and a few hours after a water change just to see how much IO was replenishing the levels

BEFORE 12 pm
Calcuim-450ppm
Alklinity- 8.4

AFTER 4pm
Calcuim-481ppm
Alk-8.5

Lets see what everyone else comes up with ... should be interesting to see the difference before and after . so  dont be afraid to let us know what type of salt it is your using and your levels before and after your water changes .

calcuim in frag tank was at 450ppm before water change 481ppm after water change , this is in the tank ....

What I would like to get out of this is seeing all different types of salt and how much they really do buffer your levels when changing water . SaltyCracker should enjoy this since hes been searching out new salt and it would be cool to see the differences just to satisfy my curosity

Will do, it all depends on the amount of water changed and each batch of IO can vary from batch to batch. Even salt in a bucket can settle if not mixed prior to adding to water...

I am getting significant reductions noticeable after a few weeks with about 4 water changes.

90g
Ca was 400 ish
changed 25 gallongs over 2 weeks
Ca was 370 ish

alk was not affected as much, held around 9

When yu tested at 12.  Then yu dumped it right in after testing?.. So 4 hrs?

I make my new water  24 hours before I use it ..... the next day I tested the tank at 12pm and it was at 450ppm ..... right after I tested the tank I changed the water over with the new stuff old stuff down the drain  .... around 4pm that afternoon I went back down and tested my calcuim again so around 4 hours after doing a water change I tested AGAIN and calcuim was up 31ppm from 450 to 481.

mag will also play big role in this.

it shouldnt really , if you mag is up to par then there should be no difference ... unless your having trouble raising calcuim then mag would play a role just my opinoin. I kno for me I add mag to my top up water becasue it does not replenish after a WC it actually drops every time you change water .

I've got a batch of red sea pro mixing right now, made it up yesterday.  I may just run the gamut of tests on it today, Ca, Alk, PO4 etc.  Be interesting to see.

All I've noticed about red sea is that it mixes really dirty... the storage tub is really cloudy and there is a foamy substance on the surface.  I add it through a filter sock and the tank is fine, but it's an observation.  I definitely have noticed that I've had low Ca levels lately, and I dose calcium daily through auto dosers. It would be good if people have some data to back up findings, even if, yeah, batches are likely all different...

I don't care what salt I use, but it would be nice to know if any of them consistently drop Ca levels or raise ALK levels, etc.

I didn't know that you added mag to your top up, i just meant if you test then do a water change and test, the mag will be down due to the water change, but if your adding it to your top up then it'll be the the same.

Ya sorry I didnt mention that .. but this should be known that everytime a water change is done your mag drops and should be supplmented back ... its not drastic but should be known if your having troubles with calcuim its probably because your mag is to low .
