Thawing Food

Whenever we thaw Mysis/ brine shrimp I always do it in tank water, then rinse with freshwater. Is there really a good reason to use tank water instead of fresh right from the start? What are your methods?

If "fresh water" is Ro or Rodi you'll be fine , it's just when you use all take water it's a guaranty that nothing "bad" soaked into the food . Here's what I do step by step

1 . Place food in cup and add take water (add your garlic guard or vitamins at this time if you do) then let stand for 10-15 min

2. After that I grab a smaller mesh fish net and pour it all in the net .

3. A rise with tank water , then I flip the net inside out while pouring the water back into the cup .

4. Feed away .

I always thaw mine in Fw. Fish are constantly working to excrete salt from their bodies and so are their prey...they don't need anymore salt in their diet...but it really doesn't make that much difference.

....and sometimes I just throw the cubes in the tank...yes a huge source of phosphates but they are so easily eliminated, I don't mind them being in the water column temporarily...

Oh there's a ritual to feed your fish? I've been doing it wrong all this time?

Ritual Heck my wife writes a feeding calander for me to follow. I probably take better care of the pets than myself.

I always thaw mine in warm fresh water then rinse and feed.

I thaw Mysis, Bloodworms, LRS Reef Frenzy, Cyclop-eeze in a squeeze bottle with tank water, then add Reef Nutrition Phyto, Oyster Feast and Arctic Pods.
Let it thaw a bit...give it a good shake to mix everything up then squeeze as needed into the tank and refrigerate whatever is leftover for the next feeding. I do not rinse anything, I have never had issues with phosphates, but I am running approximately 300g total water volume and use RowaPhos in a tlf150.

I thaw my frozen food in RO/DI water, I then rinse the shrimp then feed the tank. I noticed that not all frozen food are created equal, some of the brands leave the water in the thawing glass a nasty colour while other brands remain clear when thawed. Off the top of my head I can't think of the brand I prefer, I buy it though at the aquarium store next to Big Al's on Dundas.
