I'm looking for some good leads on where I should look to do more reading about the different types of sumps and applications. I've read about the Herbie, sounds interesting, I'm going to look up the beanie? and the berlin method. My tank has one corner overflow, and eventually I'd like to go with a bigger sump (maybe 65 gal) a 40 came with it, but if I have to room I'm thinking bigger is better, set up behind the tank in the same room. I'd like to have my salt mixing tank behind it as well.  I'm thinking raised so it's easier to work on. I know very little about plumbing, read nil, nada nothing LOL
Any places to look would be great, any recommendations  and pitfalls to avoid would be great too.
thanks guys

With a corner overflow you would not be able to go with a Bean Animal setup. You can definitely do the Herbie method though. You would use both lines in your overflow as drain lines and then bring the return line up over the top of your tank. You would need to add a PVC gate valve on your one drain line to dial the flow in properly. They are not really cheap... $45 or so for the valve depending on what size you need.

As for the sump height, if you can get it off the floor then great. Just remember you can only go so high because you need gravity working for you on your drain lines from your display tank. If the lines are coming off the bottom of your tank then you wouldn't be able to raise it much at all.

For sump design, I would first figure out what in-sump skimmer you want to run. You then take the footprint of the skimmer and design that compartment to fit the skimmer in properly with some room to play.

*** Thanks so much spyd, to be honest, I still don't have a solid understanding of the sump system and what will be required. I have to do some more reading, but in for a penny in for a pound at this point, what's another 45 bucks if it's what is needed to do the job right, I want to be sure to research and get it right (hopefully) the first time around. My overflow only has one drilled hole in the bottom of it. I had watched a BRS video about the sump and liked the idea of the herbie, possibly it won't work for me. I think they had 2 holes drilled at the top of the overflow if I remember correctly, I'll go back and watch it again. I could have these drilled if need be?  At this point I'm just looking at options. I'm no where near being ready to set it up. I've been picking up equipment when a deal happens along, a little bit here a little bit there.

***** I wasn't thinking of very high, even a 10 inches or a foot? if possible, I was just thinking easier to clean around and a little easier to work on maybe?

******* I've already got the skimmer, thanks to Phi who put me on to a real deal, I have a Marine Sources Devil SP3 sitting in the box and waiting !

I am probably getting ahead of myself, and thanks for patiently responding, I appreciate it. I will make the room behind the tank for the sump set up vs having in the cabinet, I'd rather give up a little more floor space and have it accessible - easy accessibility, visibility just makes sense to me rather than cramming it under the cabinet.
thanks so much !

So a little confussed.

Are you asking about how to build a sump? Or the plumbing of one? Or both? LOL

I can give you the sump suggestion that I went with but as far as the plumbing I have one overflow in my tank and it just goes out with very little noise as I dont hear anything untill the TV is turned off and it just sounds like a little water flow of in the distance which I find rather relaxing as well as looking at the tank!

After looking at about 100 vids of sumps this is the one that I modeled mine after!

Reefin !!!!
thanks so much, I was looking for both sump and plumbing info, and that video by newyorksteelo is exactly what I was looking for, I know very little about the sumps and was hoping that someone who has a system that they are very happy with would share what they've done and like.
This is a very big help. I can search forever and not find exactly what I'm looking for, so I decided I'd ask those who've done it already ! it's really appreciated.

You are quite welcome! This is my 3rd DIY sump and the best I have had so far! There are some other designs out there that work very well so do more research. The other build is with the return in the center so it would go skimmer(input from DT) / return / refuge (input from DT) a little more complicated on the flow to get exactly the way you want it but I see a lot of DIY'ers doing them this way. I really don't think there is much of a difference in this configuration I think its more of personal preference. JMO

Thanks again.
I am fond of the kiss theory, as I am completely unfamiliar with most of the equipment and theories behind a lot of it I was looking for something that someone else is using and is happy with. I'm not one for uncharted territory, I've gotten into far too much of that with the re learning of what not to do with a salt tank.
thanks again, much appreciated.
