Stand

I purchased a 120 gallon. Came with DIY stand. But its not going to work for me.

So looking into stands. I have made my own before. But considering buying one.

Just a standard pine stand.

Price isn't bad considering my time to build and buy materials if i did it myself.

Question is this.
When I look at the store bought stands, man they don't look anywhere near as robust as my home made stands.
I am surprised they hold the weight at all.

Are we over engineering our DIY stands then.

I have noticed the same thing. I remember emailing hagen asking about one of their stands. They refused to tell me what the weight capacity was. Said they didn’t know (yeah right!) I’m almost certain I overbuild my stands. When dealing with tens, sometimes hundreds of gallons of water, better safe than sorry. Especially when it’s for someone else’s tank and home!

most stands are made out of chip board and are garbage these days and will disintegrate with short term water exposure, i think diy is the way to go cuz a properly built stand made by anyone of talent will be very pricey.. which i can do

Most will be made out of MDF as it will swell with long period of water exposure but yet hold much of its original strength and once it dries its good to go again. When natural wood is use Pine, Spruce 2 x 4 and or 2 x 6 they to will swell with long exposure but the problem comes when it dries and starts to warp which can cause some major problems as not much will stop it. The bigger the Tank foot print the better the weight spread will be 1 Gal. Water = 10 Lbs. so the worst Tanks are the tall 90 and 125 Cube or Octagon, will have a much higher Pound per square inch then the standard rectangular Tank.

I am debating building or buying. Not sure which is better. Like I said earlier. Buying is easier but the stands just don’t look strong. But they must b. I guess.

i used all "blue" wood to build the stand for my 200g.

make one out of 3/4 plywood stronger and more stable than anything else but use veneer core not particle core.

Made mine out of pine for my 300g deep dimension. All wood received 3 coats of marine seal or spar before assembly.

I built my stand out of steel, powder coated with a zinc rich primer an 2 coats of black, the skinned it with removable panels.
