Hey all,

I am currently planning a 125 Gallon reef aquarium that will hold a mix of SPS, LPS, and Softies. Fish too. I have been doing quite a bit of reading on the best way to promote coral growth. Watched all the BRSTV Videos that I can on the topics and am still back forth on what direction to go.

I am looking at the Red Sea foundation and possibly the colours program, however, should I use the NOPOX or should I use GFO, anyone have experience with both and what option is best?

Cheers!

I'm in the GFO club. I've seen many tanks with better results using GFO. Redsea products are great but the NOPOX isn't as successful long term. I believe it's basically pure alcohol so vodka dosing is similar.

GFO doesn't remove nitrate though? does it? =/

Yes, NoPox for the most part is denatured alcohol.

PS

Still rather new here... who is this from Big Al's London? Tony? Aaron?

It's Aaron and correct GFO doesn't remove nitrates but you could also run bio pellets or just stay up on the water changes.

I'm a 100% DSB fan. Never have nitrates at all in my system. Never vacuum the sand, and I rung GFO for the phosphates. Everything just works.

I will say though, when I shut down my last tank, the smell that came out of that DSB was insane. Very good for the tank, not so good on the nose :)

"One of the principal benefits to deep sand bed methodologies is the potential for natural nitrate reduction (NNR). The speed and extent to which a DSB can reduce nitrate in an aquarium amazes many aquarists… especially those that have struggled with nitrate control for any length of time through other means. The benefits to an established tank with the upgrade to a DSB are apparent in just a few weeks with potential for complete nitrate reduction (to “zero”)!"
