That is a pretty broad question. To me an excellent skimmer is one that is well built, quiet, easily adjustable and has a known reliable pump. There are a lot of skimmers on the market. Some louder then others. Some running Jebao pumps and other Red Dragon pumps. I personally run a new design on an old school skimmer style known as a Beckett Skimmer. I run a Bashsea Twisted 6-30 skimmer with a Mag12 to drive it. Yes, it costs a little more monthly to run on hydro at 110 watts vs the 40-60 most ventri style skimmer use. This by far has been my favorite skimmer ever. One feature I love the most is that water level does not effect the skimmer at all. It is also supper easy to adjust with a industrial gate valve and my mag12 is silent as well as a known reliable pump.

I use an old school AquaC. Work perfect for me. i actually purchased it from a forum member 6-7 years ago, still pulling the poop out of the system.

For me, I look for a skimmer with a clearly marked optimum water line, and for the love of all things holy, a pump that is not inside the skimmer body.

I had a bubble magus that had an internal pump which needed fiddling-with fairly often, and I had to open the godddamn thing every time it got finniky, then the pump went bad and put 10,000,000 volts into the water, at which point I found out that BM knew of the problems with the pumps, but kept selling them anyway. So (for me) eff BM.

I grabbed a reef octopus and I swear to you, I've never had to clean the pump in the 4 years I've been running it. Just insane. I can't say that's indicitive of RO quality, I may have just got a real good one, but WOW the difference between the two products was awesome (the RO is way way better at dialing in your skim thickness too).

As always, that's just my take on it. If I had to replace my skimmer I'd buy a reef octopus again in a heartbeat.

Reef Octopus 150 SSS. For the money hard to beat. Old style like Bubble King 160 straight tube 5" Dia. with good pump, easy to set up. Can't say I have heard any negative comments on unit, nut when I tried one the only complaint from me is Cup can be heard to remove sometimes and no drain hole on cup.
