Question About Boxing Day Salt Sale

Why do they not just let people pre order their salt for Boxing Day? Every year places run out some stores have some left while other stores are out in the first few hours.

Wouldn't it be better if you could just get what you wanted when you want it?

You can call and order over the phone with a credit card or go into the store and pay for it during the sale that day and they will let you know when it comes in. Or at least Big Al's does that.

Also, due to sales tactics, stores won't discuss their boxing day sales early. So pre ordering discount salt on a sale no one has announced isn't really possible.

Oh I'd go to the store and wait in long lines and patiently wait my turn to save a tenner on a pail of salt. But 90% of the multiple buckets are regulars and drop a boat load of cash on the hobby.

Was kind of thinking like a customer appreciation thing.

I remember years ago when I managed the Kitchener big als, one Boxing Day around close the owner of the London store called bragging about how he sold 2 skids of salt in the first 2 hours of the day. I said "congratulations, you just sold almost 50 pails of salt that you make nothing on!" Lol
Anthony's theory back then was to stock just enough to say he had some so the first few customers wouldn't be pissed. Then he would always save a dozen buckets or so and bring them onto the floor after the boxing week sales were over. It's all about having that eye catcher product that gets you in the stores.

It's the above attitude to be honest why you see less and less brick and mortar shops. Better get used to online now.
Yes, I have no understanding why brick and mortar stores are not more competitive. I guess its just progress. Convenience is king! online stores deliver to your house and computers have pretty well eliminated mail so, ya this is the attitude. I have also noticed the online store people never appear to be snarky or to busy to wait on me.

Someone set me straight. I don't remember the discount on the orange top buckets being huge. Maybe $10 off plus a $10 mail in rebate. The mail in rebate wouldn't affect the store it's direct from the manufacturer right ?

The thing that pissed me off last year was at the BA Newmarket I purchased 3 buckets, cashed out, read the fine print on the mail in rebate that you needed 1 receipt per bucket. Went back into the store literally from putting the buckets in my trunk, showed them the error that I needed 3 receipts not 1. Sorry sir nothing we can do. Can't even return it and cash you back out.

Big old song and dance assuring me that I would get 3 rebates blah blah blah. Bottom line. Submitted all 3. Only received one rebate.

Have I stopped shop in there. No. If I can't get items else where either online or LFS, do I. Yes.

They were $44 or so each before the rebate. Which is almost half price as it is typically $80 around here. And that is before the rebate.

well hopefully one of our great and highly respected affiliates on the site will blow BA's out of the water (salt) with better or more convenient deals!

Right.

Mail in rebates do not affect the store at all. Everyone wins. Other than the "inconvenience" of having to do so. That said, pretty lousy service from your shop there. I can get it on Boxing day. They would likely be SWAMPED. Many places don't take returns for a few days after. Rightfully so. You'd think they would just tell you to come back in a few days and they would change paperwork around for you. Certainly wouldn't be too much to ask, that's for sure.

Exactly.
It won't be long before there are no brick and mortar stores left. Everyone demands cheap cheap cheap and nowadays with forums like this, kijiji, Facebook and online people are purchasing less and less from retail stores. That combined with the fact that the aquarium hobby is dyeing because kids don't ask for aquariums for their birthday or Christmas anymore, instead they all want electronic gizmos makes it very difficult for retail aquarium stores to make any money. These days it takes giving away buckets of salt to get anyone in your door and then you hope they buy something else that you can actually make a few bucks on. Most times, they line up for the big ticket sales item and leave with just that.
This is all well and good but just don't be surprised in ten or fifteen years when there are no local retailers to go visit.
