I have a purple and a blue tang in the same tank...they don't care at all that the other is there :)

You shouldn't have too many problems with them.

If you have a purple tang, it is other tangs that are same species you need to be cautious about.

Yellow, sailfin, black tang, scopas, gem tang are some.

usually its ones that look alike that fight. Also, by adding the purple after will help, as they can be aggressive.
But I'm no expert on these things.

No you are right,
Rule of thumb is if they have the same body shape OR are the same colour the fish will
Be aggressive
There are a lot of other factors of course, how you add when you add, and you should definitely research whatever it is you want to add

Also, some fish are aggressive to ANY newly introduced fish (within reason, a tang shouldn't give a few chromis that much of an issue, but any species of larger fish may be a different story). Also, size of tank and room to hide will make a difference. I've found in the past if you can add a couple of a fish at a time, it also helps to spread the aggression out resulting in less stress on one individual fish.

i had to put my striatus bristletooth in with a yellow that had been 6 months established definately not recommended but they share the same veggie clip and not a mark on either or ever any tail flapping is allways a risk with tangs but some work some dont try to keep body and colours different and you will be fine and newer addition should be bigger

Think that bristletooth is actually an eyestriped tang :)
