In my area when there is a bad storm and the power goes out its usually for a good couple hours so ill hook it up right away.
I would think the tank would be fine for a while though without anything.

Our hydro seems to go out a lot in Lucan....... Couple hours is nothing to worry about IMO but I will usually get our generator running if it is more than that.....
And although hydro is usually pretty good about when they estimate power to return.....don't always rely on it to be accurate. Better safe than sorry.

I think this was the longest its been out since moving into town and we've been here 2 years. Nothing like it was out in the country. If the wind blew the wrong way it was out for a couple of hours easy. It was 16 years ago I believe that we lost our hydro for 3 days about this time of year too. We lost our 65 gallon reef tank that we had back then.

I think we had a thread about this a while back. Quite a few of us have generators. I know if I lost power I would fire it up a few times a day to keep the fridge/freezer and tank okay. I figure if I ran the generator for an hour, every 6-8 hours I'd be golden until the juice comes back.

We also use a generator. It is not very big at present but we want to upgrade in the future for one that can run the essentials in the house as well as my tanks. For the moment, this one does very well and in the spring I'm going to wire up some receptacles specifically for the generator so we don't have to run many feet of extension cords through the house to get to the tanks. Our power has gone out twice this winter for 6 and 8 hours respectively and this generator kept everything in tip top shape.

If you guys all want, u can just bring some extensions cords to my place and ill help you out with our massive built in generator

You can just buy a UPS battery back-up from Staples or most computer stores. It will last a good hour or 2 depending on the size you buy.
One with a pure sine wave is best to keep your return pump running.

Your good for at least 6 hrs. Without power.

Anyone ever read about the loss SniperSPS (Hugo) took when he lost his power and was told a false power return time? Not good......
