i wouldn't knock your self out figuring out, you r goal should be 0. what shade is that :)  water changes and a good refugium is what is needed to take out nitrate. actually just a refugium will do it. no refugium , lots of water changes to keep in check.  think of your refugium as a marsh. a marsh takes nitrates out of the water.  honestly, i don't know if anyone can really have a thriving salt water set up without one. i beg your pardon if you do.

Fuges are on their way out... Bio pellets take their place, new tech :)

There are many people without a refuge, and many people with successful reefs that don't have 0 nitrates.

Bio pellets are just another form of carbon dosing, old tech, new way.

Yes sir, but I'll still call it new tech, a printing press creates book,  , high speed laser printers now create books etc, old idea but still new tech :)

0 nitrates means more possibilities.  your clowns breed, your corals grow faster, your anenomes split and multiply, your fish live longer. you don't clean the inside of the glass as much....  sure, you don't know what your missing if you never had. a perfect system promotes more opportunities for hobbyist. don't you agree with that?
