The best learning I did was watching, listening and following those guys that were successful doing what I wanted to do.    I find that often we can get caught up in all the science (or unscience), debate etc. by smart sounding people but if they dont have the tank to match, well that tells you a lot.

It is great, but governed pretty strongly by supporters though. I am not aloud to post that I can make Jebao/Apex cables there unless I pay to be a supporter, of which they will not let me be one even if I paid, most likely because they are being pressured by their other supporters. There is a lot of info there, but I find that it is too busy and constantly peoples issues are being over looked and conversions are left unresolved...even more so then here lol.

I find myself on R2R a lot still, and Reefcentral, but mostly here...obviously.

when it comes to RC I find you have to find the sub forum(s) you most identify with and stick with them.  I know personally 99% of my time on there has been in the SPS forum.  Its probably been my best online source of information in that regard and keeping my time there makes the forum seem smaller and more personal.

I agree with you, I spent 95% of my time in the SPS forum, and the other 5% in the photography forum.  I do occasionally wander over to some of the other forums, but that is pretty rare.

The search function in that forum is incredible though.  You can find something if you look for it.  You can search each forum and individual threads, and I do that frequently.  There are a lot of articles and stickies too that are great resources.  They archive everything too. Unmatched on any other forum I've been on.

Thank you. I have been on reef central I find it somewhat onerous when many of the threads reach 200-300 pages. I'll stick with you guys.

This is a great question and I have to agree with the comments posted above.

My number one source for trusted information is local reefers who have success with the inhabitants and a tank that I want to keep.
I am always somewhat skeptical of anyone giving advice if they have something to gain from the advice or recommendation given.

Forums are great too, but I think you really need to know about who is providing the advice.

If you see an experienced  local reefer's tank, it is pretty easy to gauge credibility by seeing the results first hand.

+ being able to go through the history and development of systems is a great gauge of people's knowledge too.

You can see some awesome tanks but that is just a snapshot.  Looking at the history might show a reefer who goes from crash to crash, spending a boatload of money inbetween to have an impressive looking system without sustained success.

And + 1 on the pseudoscience etc.  I may be the source sometimes lol...but anyone with an actual research background only realizes how little we really know about anything.  Beware of anyone who claims that anything is an absolute fact.  They''re either selling you something or they are unaware of how complex things really are.

I agree with everything you said, In my case I've learned a lot my self on what works and doesn't, What I've experienced, what works for me, I may never have a SPS tank to die for but I'll still be successful with a very nice system, It may be limited but if i'm happy with it and that's all that matters.
