Does anyone have one or had one and tell me your experience with them and would one be ok in a 40 gallon ?

According to liveaquaria.com the minimum tank size is 30g. They are peaceful and a very cool addition to my tank.
They need a hidey hole, like a barnacle shell. Go for it!
