How much live sand do i need to minimize the cycle time. i have decided to go with the 110g tank. i will need 50-60 lbs of sand, does it all need to be live or will 20 lbs of live sand be enough?

Honestly it will take as long as it takes to cycle no matter the amount of "live sand" that you use. the live sand will still have decomposing material in it that will need to cycle.Live rock will help to reduce your cycle time more then live sand. I'll post a fish less cycle tomorrow that you can use. I don't have it on this computer.

+1 on @shamous113 fish less cycle. I followed it and it cycled my new tank without a hitch. I'd do the same on my next build.

My first tank that I cycled, which was about 2 years ago, I bought 2 pieces of live rock. I had several pieces of dry rock. I put the live rock in with the dry rock. This in turn help start my cycle and basically, over time, changed my dry rock to live rock. It doesn't happen over night but you do not need to add all live rock. Just a bit to get the ball rolling.

i have cycled a few tanks in the past. Live rock has always been the fastest for me. I have never used live sand. I was hoping it was a cheaper alternative to getting 50 lbs of live rock. With any luck i can get my hands on some live rock locally. Its getting wet this weekend and I really would like for it to be cycled by the first of September, when the kids come back to school.

Add this stuff. It work great. I use it every time with live sand and live rock and have very little cycle. I add fish pretty much right away now.

As promised here is the fish less cycle. This site has a great ammonia calculator. you can get ammonia at home hardware, it looks like the changed the package. check to make sure its only ammonia and water. if it has any sent or other stuff added it cant be used.
