Is There Such A Thing As Dead Silent Filter/pump?

I made the blunder of buying an Aquaclear 70. It rattles like pests in the attic, and hum like a cement truck. Many comments online saying how silent this filter runs, and many even saying it is dead silent.

I know the filter is a mechanical device and as such it will make noise. I just wonder if there are any experience hobbyists know if such a thing as a "dead silent" filter/pump exist.

My expectation of dead silent is absolutely no perceivable noise at 1 foot away from the tank. The only noise should be water flow if there is water agitation, or a low hum when your ear is pressed against the tank.

I have currently have at DIY filter with 12VDC pump running at 5V that is "dead silent". It won't serve my reef setup as the flow will not be strong enough.

I am hoping to not have to use a sump or cannister filter. The sun sun cannister I have still makes a hum unless I plumb it to another room.

Interested in hearing your comments.
Thanks

There is definitely something wrong with your Aquaclear 70 then. They are quiet. I used to run Aquaclear filters on all my fresh water tanks and never heard any of them. I have even put some back on line for temp tanks I have used in salt water. After being out of water for a few years they still fired up and were quiet like they were years ago. I have a new one that I acquired that is quiet as well.

My aquaclear on my QT is super quiet as well. Other than the sound of the water returning to the tank, mechanical noise i hear nothing at all.

Agree with the posts that state Aquaclear’s are quiet. Definitely my favorite HOB filter. I’ve even used a big one as a refugium in a SW setup
I’m currently using 2 AC50s in my freshwater setup and no sound. I’ve also used AC70 and AC110 and all perform very well and last for a very like time
Check the impeller and if it’s damaged then you can replace easily - held in by a magnet so use tongs or tweezers to remove. Replacements are available at BA’s
Another option is to clean out the impeller cavity after you pull out the impeller. They can get debris wrapped up inside them and cause noise. Generally this is more applicable to FW series with live plants
If you still have issues, I can send you my AC70 to borrow because I’m not using it ATM

I’ve never had a silent HOB filter, I’ve tried numerous brands/models. Closest I had was a seachem tidal. Even though you mentioned not wanting to use canister, I think you’d be quite content performance and sound wise with an eheim canister. Just my 2 cents.
