Was wondering is it ok to use a sump or bilge pump in my fuge as my return?? Ive found a 1200 gph one for 60 bucks at a loca store.  Any input on this. It sucks water from the bottom instead of the side. Are they safe to use??.

well there not made for saltwater, they will suck up anything that comes near them.  and there made to run for short periods of time.  i would stay away from them and get a return pump.

I agree...not a good idea. Odds are it will overheat and burn out in a day or two. Also since it's designed to pump waste water there are likely brass fittings since it's relatively resistant to corrosion and cheaper than stainless steel. Brass being an alloy of copper and zinc will not do good things for your tank......

Sump pumps are only made to last for about 10,000 flushes and then they need to be replaced , so for poeple who use them where there house is on clay go threw them like crazy as oppose to poeple who have houses built on sand where the sand would drain most of the water before it has time to make it to a sump pump. So using one of these for a reef tank return really doesnt work .
