Depending on size, it could be some sort of nudibranch. If it was in my tank, I'd remove it. Depending on the species, they don't usually survive long term because of specialized diets. Worse, is that when they do die, they can release some nasty toxins.

Could also be Aplysia vaccaria...aka black sea slug...not so bad and a good algae eater. More info is needed on it. Either way, I would get rid of it.

What does it look like under water and do you have a pic of that? Does it move? Some sponges look like that if it doesn't move.

I removed it from my system, it doesn't move from what I've seen but when I looked under closer inspection there was more than one spot of it. It is seems to be soft leathery/rubbery. Still very curious of what it is, maybe someone has experienced it before and will come forward!

That piece is appropriately the size of the tip of your pinky. Thanks for the response!

black sponge was my first thought as well

I believe that it is a Flatworm ( Nuti ). When they are stationary they will look as it does in your photo but when in motion they have the fluttery motion and outside rim looks like frilly lace. Just a quick photo I found when not in motion.
