I will never stick another hermit in a reef tank

In my old 180g I added 100$ of trochus snails, every single one was eaten in a matter of a week.
They will devour snails IMHO
Save your self the money and buy some more snails :)

I have a bunch.

I have heard they can go after snails for their shells. This has been confirmed since one of my hermits is now wearing a turbo shell.

There are the normal red legged ones and then the blue legged variety that seem to be common in salt water aquaria.

I have lots, all my hermits are model citizens and they haven't killed any snails. 2 years going strong. The don't bother coral and clean up constantly.

Not worth it IMO. Mean little creatures. They will definitely take shells from snails, even just to try on and you don't want rotting snails in your aquarium. They stink to high heavens. Also, the amount of beneficial cleaning hermits perform is next to nothing compared to what snails will accomplish for your tank.

If you put in a few cups of the coarse substrate it always has snail shells.  Hermits only go after snails if they can't find anything easier.

Stick with blue legs, they don't get big at all.  I've never had an issue anyway.

I have both red and blue legged hermits. No issues here with them. Maybe I just got lucky..
