Ok so i recently posted a thread with pics regarding nuisance algae in my tank- green and red dust algae on the glass. So yesterday I go down to feed my fish and along the rim of the tank at the surface water I have F&$@ing green hair algae growing!!! WTF!? I thought in a cycled mature tank this won't happen? I'm doing everything right... My own RO water, water changes, p skimmer, cheato in sump lots of live rock... Yet I'm getting algae everywhere again. Why us this happening? I'm going to test my water tonight again. Last time I did it my phos reading was so little it appeared to be 0, my ammonia is always around .25 and nitrates usually between 10 and 15 even with a skimmer... So what am I doing wrong?

Well bottom line is if you have hair algae then you have an influx of nutrients buddy.. I know sucks. Also your lights may be dimming if their life span is up??
Scrape it off, suck it out, do a couple water changes and hope for the best.
Cheers!

Most test kits available don't detect P in the low enough concentrations that allow the nasty HA outbreaks. You would need an ultra low test kit or test meter.

Nitrates and phosphates.... solutions are......
Increase water flow.....
Tackle source of N&P......
Phosphate reactor.....
Stabilize ph and alk (2 part or kalk)......
Carbon Dosing......
Watch what your touching or washing your hands with before playing in the tank (even soaps and detergents have crazy amounts of Phos....don't believe me just ask a deer hunter)

Potential Causes.... Is your skimmer destined for the g files because it's not doing it's job?...
A SSB turns evil after about 6 months -1 year and starts to leach all the nasties back out if it's not sugar sand.....
Not enough flow to keep detritus suspended adding to the substrate problem.....
Live rock might be full of gunk if you don't regularily blast it with a powerhead or turkey baster (again more flow will help).....
Could be your food....
Could be your lights shifting spectrum.....
When did you last check the TDS of your RO (are filters/membrane shot)....

This is all I have off the top of my head

almost every food you put in your tank has po4, run GFO either in a reactor or hang a sock with some in it in your sump
