Just wondering how everyone sets up their sumps to prevent overflows and or burning out your pumps etc.

Float switches for low level in sump.  Also overflows upstairs are protected with with a float switch in the sump..  Too much water goes up stairs and the sump level drops.  Apex used to turn everything off.

Siphon breaks drilled into return plumbing to prevent back siphoning when the system shuts off

I have an Elos Osmocontroller ATO unit. Uses a heat sensor to detect any variance in water level. I like the Tunze ATO units as well. They have both a sensor and a back-up float switch to ensure no overflows or low water levels.

And as Neopimp states, syphon breaks on my return plumbing and water line from my RO resevoir.

Oversize your drains, undersize/throttle your returns. Don't try to use your filtration system to provide circulation flow.

Clean/check your siphon breaks regularly, like every time you clean your glass.

+1  :)  If you drill just below or at the water level in the DT there is minimal backflow.  A float valve and automatic top up for sump (or just plain watching each morning and evening and filling up) should prevent the pump going dry.

I have a water mark in the sump, the ato only fills to that, and when the pumps turn off, if the water isn't above that line, then the tank will only drain to fill the sump.  I have to be careful, I once pointed my return jet downwards and so it drained deeper... gotta find backflow restrictors for that.
