That you can almost hear it thank you?

I recently learned the siphon-through-a-sock-back-into-the-sump trick.

Man that works so amazing!

I assume you are siphoning water out of your tank, but instead of throwing the water out, you siphoning it back into the sump, but mechanically filtering it with a sock....

In essence, you are not really doing anything new, if you already have filter socks on your drains in your sump....

It lets you target dirty spots in your tank with out loosing the water if you aredumping it to drain. Filter socks do the same thing but only catch the free floating stuff .

I always feel stirring up the water doing any siphoning is getting the tank much dirtier than not doing anything.. I don't syphon and haven't ever.. Not once.

I don't use filter socks in my sump.  I hate them.  they restrict too much flow IMHO and causes the ATO to run too much based on how dirty the socks are (ATO and Skimmer in 3rd chamber of sump) and then when the socks are cleaned the level goes up cause of the new flow and then the skimmer goes crazy.  Too much trouble!

Like another user said I siphoned through the sock returning the water back to the sump to simply target dirty spots.  I just got done scraping the film algae off the back and did a 20gal water change but the tank was still dirty.  I was like.....hey.....why don't I just keep the pump running and put a sock on the end of the siphon and just target all the free floaters and other spots.

Works great.  So if you find my tip useful, you're welcome :)

Your not doing much IMO.your basically making your water even dirtier. my opinion, your running all your water being siphoned threw dirty gunk in the sock. Which probably makes your po4 or nitrate levels even higher

It would be different if that water wasn't making its way back into tank. But as of now, your just running clean water threw dirty sock filled with detruis from your tank.

If it is restricting your water flow in your sump you should change the filter sock. It is hands down the second most common thing I do on my tank the first is feeding..... I have to do it like every 3 - 4 days.

I have no patience for filter socks... I started to use one when I stir up my sandbed and blow off my rocks but that is the only time. I then remove it the next day and clean it out.

It sounds like a good concept IMO. Since my DT is upstairs and my ST is in the basement, I designed an extra port so I can hook up this “central vacuum” and clean the substrate better. I have crushed coral as substrate.

I did not do it because I am not sure if during siphoning other dissolved substances in the substrate may get back into the system in high concentration at once.

I guess if you do often enough, toxic substances would not have time to accumulate???

I don't use socks in my sump because there really isn't anything to catch. But I have on my returns at one point or another running 2500gph though them and they disnt get plugged for about a week, I'm guessing your using one that's too small or too fine if it's overflowing so quickly, try a 7" round 12" deep 400 micron mesh sock.. They rock.
