Dosing?

Dosing... who does, who doesn’t and what do you use?

Recently have picked up a few sps frags. I know they are harder corals to grow.

Been doing some research on dosing and was thinking of having a dosing pump on hand for when I need it. Leaning towards brs 2 part.

Just curious what everyone’s experience is with dosing.

I do not currently dose. I do 20% weekly water changes.

Calcium 530-560 (no idea why so high)
Alk 6-6.5
Mag 1200-1290
Salinity 1.023 (was low at 1.021 and slowly getting to 1.026)
Temp 77
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Ph average 8.2

I've been using randy holmes farley Recipe #1 and I manually dose every morning. I try to keep alkalinity 8.3-9.3 on KH scale; calcium 420; magnesium 1300. I let my alk slip in the early summer after our little one was born and I lost some of the sps that I had because of it.

I use the reefsupplies.ca stuff, its very similar to the brs but the purity isnt as good. i use to use the brs and like it better but stopped when the dollar dropped. A auto doser will really make this a lot easier and stable, the hardest part is getting it all setup s and figuring out your systems demands

Fauna Marin Balling Salts with a Kamoer 3 head doser. Although it o not looks like your alk is on the low side.

is your 20% wc all in one shot or spread out during the week? Make sure that when you start dosing that you don't raise your alk more then 1.0 in a 24hr period. When I brought my alk after neglecting my tank I took my daily use and doubled it. I brought it up to where I wanted it over 3 weeks, slow and steady.

they are saying:
Calcium: target 422 mg/L, range 400 to 443 mg/L
Would try different Calcium test ... and another KH test just to make sure the level is correct.

I was doing 10%/wk in one shot and noticed a large jump in in my ca and alk. I started doing mine spread out over the week, 2 at 5%. it makes for a little more work but it keeps things more stable imho. The first step is getting your Salinity where you want it then calculate your current levels and your daily requirements. here is a good calculator make sure to keep it under 0.001 in 24hr when your increasing.
