Ok guys, its been brought to my attention that an algae scrubber might be my solution to Display Tank blues lol. I hate that green film and brown hair algae all over the place, so im thinking that my cheato and skimmer alone aren't enough for my tank to be algae free. so im onto a scrubber diy. Anyone that has built one or is using one that can gimme some pointers and possibly if its worth while please chime in....gonna start this as soon as i figure out what i can use as a screen without having to run out and buy something. thanks all....

Hi Kyle,The ideal surface would be for crafter's at"Michaels" called "Plastic Canvas" or maybe the Mrs has some plastic canvas laying around. You want to grab a hole saw and "by hand" use the teeth of the hole saw to scrape the plastic canvas surface both sides and or double up a two layered pieces of plastic canvas. It will take you sometime to do but scrape the plastic canvas till the surface becomes really rough, like the feel of cactus. :)

ya this project has been staring me in the face all night, i have the pump i have the pvc already drilled, but i don't have anything i could supplement the plastic screen with. so off to the store i go tomorrow to grab something and see what i can conjure up. i dont have alot of room in my sump however if i can somehow get it to securely mount above the first section of my sump i may be able to get it to work. I have also been toying with the idea of actually using the overflow drain as my source for the screen. instaed of running another pump have the over flow spill into a trough that has holes in it above the sump and pour down the screen that i can make removable. anything is possible im sure just need some creativity! thanks for your help tho brian.....hope this works

Hi Kyle, I have plastic canvas for you , it is free for the taking. I have different plastic canvas mesh sizes for you to choose from. I figure you will need 1.0 square inches of screen per gallon, with bulbs on BOTH sides (10 x 10 = 100 square inches = 100 gal)
[1.64 square cm per liter] so if you have a 50 gallon your screen only needs to be half the 100 gallon size with lighting on both sides. So I hope you see this message before buying because I have plenty of plastic canvas for you to choose from.

Hi Kyle, I used 1 inch pvc. I used a dremel tool with a thin grinding disk to cut a straight slot horizontally the length of the pvc to slip the plastic canvas in and tied it off with electrical ties.
