i was asked the other day if I had any hobbies. I mentioned that I have a saltwater tank an then found myself defending the hobby.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has encountered a person that vilifies you for ruining the coral reefs and encouraging poisoning marine life to collect fish, just to satisfy your hobby?

I just let them know that the majority of us buy sell and trade within each other. We grow and sell to each other. We bring awareness to people who are not aware and I am more then happy to discuss all the coral farms and sustainable options that are out there.
I did give a little speech, and had the person warmed up the the idea of the hobby and then wanted to see if I had any pictures on my phone. I said I didn’t and politely left the conversation.

The way I look at it some day if it isn’t for us in the hobby there will be no such thing as corals . There’s so much bleaching going on that there’s a reason some stuff if “rare” and if we don’t buy it and if people don’t farm it in the ocean (getting frags and regrowing to place back and sell) then we are doomed , people who judge don’t do research. IMO .

It's an up hill battle educating people, it takes great patients some times to explain to them how fraging works and that most of the coral in my tanks have come from other people in the hobby. I find most people cant believe that you can break a pc off and start a new colony. educating people and getting our kids addicted to this hobby is the only way it will survive.

I guess I picked the wrong hobbies and industry lol...
I had no less than 3 texts last night in response to the US school shooting, as if somehow a nutjob mowing down his fellow classmates is related to me liking to go out to the range and putting holes in paper. It got so silly that I was arguing back that anyone with aspirin in their cupboard automatically is responsible for all the country's fatal overdoses of drugs, since they "obviously fully support murder by medication".

That said, I couldn't give a flying ... if people have the "I don't like it, so I don't think you should have it" mentality. It's legal, I follow the rules, and jump through allllll the hoops.

So saltwater isn't even on the radar for people's moral outrage :)

Tell 'em you go out into the coral reefs with grenades, and just collect all the fragments that land in the boat...and glue them back together.

...actually probably not a good idea. If trudeau heard that story he'd believe it, and start some crusade to dump billions of dollars into the ocean to save "coral warming" or some other idiotic move. ;)

Wait...you don’t get your frags like that? Have I been doing it wrong?
