So why are people having such vast differences in IO vs DD salt? They state the same if mixed to 1.026...I am confused. I am about to try it myself, but still a little confused at where the difference is and why people are reporting less dosing.

IO states specific gravity of 1.026, Instant Ocean® should provide a solution that has
400 mg/L calcium
1320 mg/L magnesium

DD H20 specific gravity of 1.026
440 mg/L calcium
1340 mg/L magnesium

I like h20 i found it mixes alot nicer and doesnt leave alot of residuals behind. Dosing wise i dont know because i wasnt dosing when i was using IO. It is pricey tho lol.

ive allways stuck to IO seems to be in every store and easy to get. waiting for your results torx
I will be watching, but it will take a long time to get any 100% results as I have 150 gal twv. It will take a long time before it would be considered a DD tank at 10-20 gall per week water changes. I have 1/2 bucket of IO left, then will be onto DD. Probably won't have notable results for 6 months or so unless I do some huge water changes, of which I can not afford that, or I would do that.

Maybe a bad batch? Dunno.

Did you roll the bucket before doing a WC?

ALL salt in a bucket should be rolled around before using, during shipping it can "settle" funny in the bucket.

It isnt 100% necessary, but can become a good habit to try to eliminate salt from producing NSW at a different level then listed on the pail. (You can still have a bad batch however, this just rules one more thing out)

Salt selection should be tailored to your tanks specific regime. There is no "right" answer to the "best" salt, as depending on the type of your system (FOWLR, SPS dominated, LPS, Softie, MIxed reef) any of the major brands of salt could be the best choices. Other factors to consider is your dosing amounts, water change volumes and frequency of water changes. Here is a post I just read recently on another forum and it is really bang on for some of the reasons people prefer DD vs. RC or IO (or RC/IO vs. DD).

"I've been using H2Ocean for several years now in my reef tanks for the same reason - it's derived from natural seasalt. I add Mg and K to H2Ocean and my testing has been very consistent with it. I used IO (and IO Reef Crystals) almost exclusively from 1993 to 2009 and I thought I was happy with it until I switched to H2Ocean. When I used IO I added Ca, Mg, and K. In my opinion, for the average reef aquarium IO is a perfectly fine salt to use. If your tank is PACKED with SPS corals (in particular), I think IO is sub-par. Having said that, I've seen AWESOME SPS tanks using almost every brand of salt out there. I don't think salt choice is the be all end all as long as you stick with one of the more major brands. In the end, I think it's more about parameters. If you want to keep alkalinity at 7-8 dKH, IO or IORC is a really poor choice because they have high alkalinity. If you want 9-10 dKH, then H2Ocean is not the best option."

I pretty much agree with everything this poster has said.

Dd made a positive effect on my mixed reef when changing from io
It is natural and must be rolled or shaken to compensate for settlement.
Imo I have tried io/salinity and dd and found dd far out performed.

Keep in mind that each batch of salt will vary in its actual listed parameters when mixed..... I have always tested each new batch of salt before using it. The thinking that the more expensive salt is the better one is unfortunately anything but true... Take Tropic Marine for example.... Very expensive and numerous reports of batches with extremely low trace elements for whatever reason....

@BIGSHOW not sure where you got that quote from but I find it extremely bizarre for anyone to need to add Ca, Mg, and even K but yet never Alk....lol. Pretty much defies all laws of chemistry....

But anyways....my best advice to ppl choosing salt is
1) pick a salt that is well known/used in the hobby rather than one no one uses
2) test the params on every new batch before using
3) don't keep switching salt brands

I think you missed the point where it talks about having the high ALK to begin with.

No, I seen that.... It's just odd.... Even to be dosing Mg and K but yet never alk or ca....never heard of that....

I have lots of customers that dose potasium and mag only. Depends on what your tank has. Not everyone has a full blown SPS system
