i opened a pail if salt and it appears to have gotten damn/ moist as it was hardened. I beat the crap outta it with a 2X4 and it’s into fine particles again.... can I use this salt or is it garbage ?

When the salt cakes, you will have a drop in Ca, Mg and alk from Ca/MgCO3 precipitation.

How much...test the NWS prior to use and spike with Ca and /or Mg dosing solution. Add the alk very slowly at the very end and use a high flow pump to mix to minimize precipitation.

Although true, dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) has a relatively high solubility in water and much of the components will dissolve back into the water. Calcite in comparison has a much lower solubility in water however the volume of water used to do a water change involving a 1.025 salinity will easily dissolve any components within the salt or salt carbonate precipitates.

I would never think of throwing it out, use it and adjust your perameters later, by the way this has happened to me many times. I try to store it away from moisture but once open the bucket or the salt rather will clump between water changes.
