I have a culligan RO filter system for my drinking water and have been told its not good for my setup. It was an extremely expensive system and I'm not sure I understand why it doesnt put out good enough water for my tank. What if I put a water monitor on it? I'm tired of buying RO water twice a week for water changes.

RO isn't good enough for tanks, at least some tanks, because there are still elements left in the water.  You could use your system if you added a DI stage to it for the tank water output, one that monitors output and ensures 0 TDS  (RO only is not 0TDS or you really couldn't drink it).

That's the short unscientific answer :)

I live in Watford as well. I live on John St. I have a RODI machine and you could buy the water from me if you wanted. Up to you, just putting the offer out there if the Water Island water isn't good enough. I think I saw it's worth 60 cents a gallon? I really don't care about making money, just covering what I'd need to replace filters. Let me know.

Just buy a refillable Di filter and a canister run the output of the Ro directly  into that bypassing the pressure tank if you have one and then use that for your tank. Continue to use plain RO for drinking.

You should definitely have a monitor, either online or handheld. I would monitor the output of the RO and then the RODI as well.  Quick on/offs typical of drinking water setups is hard on the ro membrane and will make it fail earlier.

I am interested in taking you up on your offer RYOUNVS at least until I can get an RODI or equivalent.
Shipwreck, I'd like to explore more in-depth your suggestion .. what is and where can I get a refillable DI filter, that sounds like a possible option. I would likely need a monitor of the water as well eh? Just wondering also how I'd have to have some go through my pressure tank for drinking and some go through the DI filter. If I had to manually valve it this may get complicated or inconvenient to constantly valve them back and forth. If I didnt manually valve it and I was filling a bucket for the tank I think I would have no pressure for drinking water. Hummm

Reading your replys again I think maybe my best/simplest option is just get a complete RODI

Probably. I have 2 vertex units an really like them. The have a built in monitor/controller, auto back flush, and booster pump to up the efficiency. Best part they are not overly expensive.

I would agree. They really are not THAT expensive when you compare the amount we spend on everything else lol. mig, have you figured out how to use your PM's? I sent you one a while back, no reply. If you know how to use them, send me a message and I'll pm you my address and phone number. I keep 120 gallons of RODI water ready to go so should be more than enough for what you need.

You have the complete system minus only the di stage , which is one canister

I've seen many home systems setup like salty is suggesting, have a T of your RO line right before your pressure tank with the appropriate vales, and run that line through DI, and into a storage /holding tank for your water changes!

Voila your done

Getting water from a friend is great but you still have to lug it, Get a RO/DI unit. The Vertex is great I've got one. 329 plus tax but you can get a good unit for 180. It's a matter of convenience .
