Correcting A Stupid Mistake

Hey All,

so, I've been running my tank for about 5 months and things were going great.

corals growing, fish doing well...I was in reefing heaven.

My fish stock in my 120 gallon tank consisted of a 6" Desjadrini Sailfin, 6" Blue tang, 3.5" Yellow tang, couple of clowns and a Royal Gramma (also have snails, star, crabs etc.)

So, I was in Mississauga on the weekend and saw a really nice 2"' purple tang for a good price and had to have it...mistake 1. don't make impulse buys of fish....

got home, was giddy as all hell...acclimated the fish, he was doing well...eating everything before I placed him in the tank....i'm like, nice, here we go.

put him in the tank, things go well for about the first hour or so. he's picking algae off the rocks, none of the bigger fish are bothering him, he's exploring...i'm happy.

Yellow tang finally takes notice and it's been a game of chase the new guy for 4 days....

I've tried keeping the lights off, re-arranging rocks, put a mirror on the glass....nothing. yellow is an a-hole. poor purple tang has been trapped now behind some rocks for a day or two now.

I want to pull out the yellow to give the purple a chance to establish himself and decide if I even want to put the yellow back in.

problem is catching yellow guy. of course, he's bold as hell with new guy, but the minute I approach the tank, he hides in the rock work.

I tried to create my own trap by taking a plastic container, wrapping some nori sheets onto a rock and dropping it in the container and hoping he would go in to graze, no such luck.

so, short of me taking out all the rocks, does anyone have a method to catch yellow tangs??

and I know, this is my fault in the first place....no need to scold...

lol

thanks

Get an actual trap. Maybe even just borrow one of someone is in the area. It can take a few days to trap or catch a fish. Be sure to spot feed the purple tang

I’ve been chasing away the yellow long enough for the purple to eat

Anyone in Scarborough have a trap I can borrow for a few days? Lol

Sorry to hear about your bad luck ! , I’ve had to catch my fish a few times , for me the hardest to catch is my wrasse they will sand dive under the rocks and I swear everything you think you got em he will dart out under the sand again ,

If your tanks a new set up I’d say around 6-9 months disturbing the substrate and rocks shouldn’t be to bad in any spikes , but always a good idea to have a good water change ready to go if you do decide to take rocks out to get that tang , any ways good luck !

So I got him out last night, ended up ripping everything apart, I’m going to see if I can find a big acclimation box to put him in instead of my sump, maybe let him get used to seeing the other guy without giving him access to him

Thanks for the link to the fish trap, I’ll definitely look into getting one for the future

Thanks again for all the replies

Homy yellow and purple for some reason MOSTLY doesn't get along. Keeping him in the acclimation box might help but I am afraid it could become vice versa as the purple would have marked his territory... These fishes r so finicky lol. Good luck and keep us posted hope they get along...
