Corraline in sump only?

Hi all,

So my tank is 5 months old now and everything is growing and seems happy. I am a little confused as to why I have corraline growing in my sump but don't seem to see any iny DT though? It can't be my levels because its growing in my sump and it can't be light because all of my LPS is growing as well as my monti frag... Am I just being a little impatient? How long did I take for others to start to see corraline when starting with base rock?

with about 250 pounds of baserock and 200 pounds of encrusted live rock within 3months I couldn't tell difference between the rock unless I picked it up and looked at bottom side.  When I first put in the baserock  every couple days I would scrape corraline off the live rock and any powerheads that had some building on it and let it flow around the tank.

I didn't have any live rock when I started out only dry base. I have put quite a few corals and frags in over the last 4 months that have been covered with coraline so I have definitely introduced it. Maybe I will scrape it off in the sump and drop it in the DT and see if I get some growth then.

You most likely have quite a bit more flow in your display than your sump, It'll take more time for the Coraline to take root in your display but it will happen, Patience my friend.

it took my dry rock about 6 months to color up, you have to get past all the micro algae diatom stages first.

Ah that makes sense, I should be more patient lol. I am just tired of looking at beige rocks :)

Already got through the diatoms and nasties thank goodness. My water is crystal clear and there is no algae to be seen except on the glass. But if yours took 6 months then I still have some time to wait.

Seeding coralline is good and you will see results if your Ca, Alk and pH are OK. Flow and light are very important. Too much light is not good.

And remember, is going to be a time (maybe after one year) when you are going to hate it :) It is going to get on power heads, on glass, on everything.

totally agree.. I was so happy when I started having it grow on my back glass. Fast forward 2 years and I would love to be back having zero coraline to deal with

One thing I barely grow any of, and I assume it's something to do with the LEDs, is coralline.  I don't get hardly any at all.  I was puzzled at first, but now as it was mentioned, I just enjoy not having to scrape it off anything (and besides monti will grow over everything anyway!).

Which is a much better look!!!!!

On the subject of coraline, mine has just recently started to take off.  I used wet liverock in my build that had coraline, some bleached and some grew a bit, but I hardly got any new spots of purple where there was previously just grey rock.  Now I'm getting new spots of it every week and they are all growing.  I did do the scraping thing a few times about a month ago though, so that may have helped.

Well there's this product called purple up, you should def get it and use it! Designed specifically for growing crazy amounts of coraline and has been developed over years of study.... Great stuff.... Oh will you look at that! We happen to have some in stock! On sale too! 50$ for a bottle!!
Well isn't it your lucky day!

( said 90% of the lfs's hahaha )

I was actually advised *against* Purple Up by my LFS!  It's basically just a calcium, magnesium and alk additive with a bit of kelp extract which is the part that supposedly spurs the corraline growth.  I had thought that it actually introduced corraline spores but apparently not.  (I know your post was in jest Brandon just adding my 2c!)

Lol! $50 to grow algae  ;D  I have heard of purple up I thought i would see what other people say before trying it. I will give it a go if I don't see any within the next couple months. Maybe it could be my LED setup?

Next week I am planning to clean the power heads and give them a vinegar rinse. If you are interested I can scrape out the coralline, put it in a sealed bag and mail it to you.

Nope. Never used purple up. It is just like Phil said, a combination of chemicals (buffers)  to make your Ca Alk and Mg right. My coralline came from various live rock and now is in my tank. I seeded at the beginning, maybe too much :)

Would it survive?
