I have used regular glass cleaner, just was overly thorough in ringing it and washing it out with vinegar. Never had an issue in the past. I use a 50/50 vinegar water mixture to clean the outside of my tank.

this is what you do sounds bad but look into it !!! clean it with bleach then with real vinegar the vinegar makes the bleach completely safe and you'll have a spotless tank if you don't believe my dad is a chemist and when people have fish only tanks and want clean looking base rock the bleach it then soak in vinegar look at the tank at coco Pelys that's what they do there hope this helps

Just noticed this thread.......are you sure there weren't any copper meds used in the tank when it was running freshies? The copper meds adhere to the silicone and slowly leach back out. I would recommend you spend a couple hours to redo the seals while you have the tank down anyhow. It's a good thing anyhow especially if you don't know how old the tank is.

Nothing would suck more than setting everything up and blowing a seal 6months later.....
