Calibrate the probe.  8.5 isn't bad. Maybe a little high but I thought 8.2-8.5 was normal

Mines 7.9 in morning before lights on and 8.4 during evening after lights been on all day.

Have you had your windows open lately? I find mine goes higher when windows are open.

I run carbon and I can't get my ph about 8.0. In fact I've never had my ph in the 8.2 range.  I have good growth at 8.0.

B4 i ran carbon.  The ph was always 7.4 - 7.8

could just be a coincidence... try some trial and error, take the carbon out for a few days and test ph, then put it back for a few days and test...
