I think once they've started to leak, they're pretty much just good for dry good storage. Set up a sales alert at Canadian tire, and you can likely get a good brute container for half the regular price.

I had on brute container (blue) that started leeching phosphate into the makeup water, so I only use food safe water containers now, you can usually find something that had olives, or pig slop or something like that in it, for a good price, farmers sometimes go through tons of containers.

There is in fact a farmer in St. Jacobs that sells 55 gsllon drums that used to be pickle barrels for 20 bucks apiece. He has thousands of them on his property.

@Salty Cracker. I use the same trash can and have been fighting unknown phosphate problem. Never accured to me to check mixing containers. Guess that's a good place to check. Appreciate you sharing your experience.

Yeah I couldn't understand where all the phosphate and HA had been coming from, because I would test the water when I ran it through the RO/DI, but I for the heck of it tested it after it was mixed up and had sat in the brute container and it was something like 300 ppm. I ended up with white brute containers, and then went to the pickle/olive drum. Haven't had an issue since, but it was really hard to figure out. I had thought the salt was maybe the source until I mixed up a clean batch and phosphates were 0.000

How long would your saltwater mix be sitting in the brute until you noticed in phosphate levels? Right after filling and mixing? A day? Week?

Likely a week, could have been more, I would just leave the tub with a tiny powerhead and a small heater in it, heat could have even been an issue who knows. I didn't really follow a water change schedule back then, it could have sat in there for a month sometimes.
