In a dielema for an additional reef tank with a smaller footprint. Cant decide between Biocube 32 gallons or the Red Sea reefer 170 which is 34 gallons.

Price whise biocube would come couple 100$ cheaper wel as RedSea looks more sleek and cones with sump etc..

Any one has any personal experience keeping either or both of them at a given time.

Appreciate your thoughts..

A couple hundred less? If money is not an issue, the Red Sea Reefer hands down kills the Biocube. I have owned a biocube and it works, but compared to a Red Sea 170, that is putting a Ferrari next to a Chevy Caliber. Cost wise, then the BioBube wins. The biocube is ready to go (lights should be upgraded though) while the Reefer needs a return pump and lights minimum. Personally you can not put a Chinese black box on a Reefer either. It would look tacky and horrible. By the time you do a new light and return pump on the Reefer, you are probably looking at almost $2k while the BioCobe is $400, plus light upgrade is still only going to be $6-700

System wise...you are extremely limited with the Biocube. There is not really any room for a skimmer or any accessories/reactors/dosing etc. It worked great for my zoa/softy tank. But if you want something with real WOW, then you will probably need a little more equipment. If funds are no issue, the 100% go for the reefer. They are worth every penny.

Thanks Torx. This would be actually for a friend of mine ism helping with. He is net new to the hobby so just trying to help him get in and not get too overwhelmed with cost, maintenance etc.

I hear the bio cube comes with upgraded LED so softies and zooas should work i guess..
I personally love the reefer 170 a lot but not sure he would want to spend that much at this point..though 2k seems a recent start for a reefer 170.. still thinking...

Thanks
