does anyone have a backup battery or something similar hooked up to their reef tanks? ive been thinkin about this lately and with all the money invested in these tanks i was curious if anyone had a failsafe method to prevent losses during power outages......if you do please share your experiences and what equipment you use. im looking to get some sort of back up battery for a power head and maybe heater in the event power goes out......thanks

I bought a gas generator this year just for this.  If power was out for 2 days in the winter you would lose everything.  I have it out in the shed, but I also got an extension cord that would reach up to the tank room.  I figure you could run it for a few hours a day to keep temps up and water circulated.  Found a good one on kijiji for next to nothing.

Lets hear some more guys :)
I've been really considering this as well as I am like a crazy man whenever the power goes out and would love to not have to worry so much about it.
Cheers!

Fairly large UPS with external batteries and a small generator here.

At minimum you should have some of those battery powered airpumps.  I've seen them wired in series with a float valve so they only turn on when the sump level rises.  Good idea.

Very good idea for an inexpensive way to keep your tank oxygenated. I have 2 powerheads connected to a UPS. I bought one initially to run my return pump but it doesn't provide enough steady power to get my pump running.

I keep my boat battery indoors during the winter. Deep cycle works good, powered a pump and heater over night still going when I woke up.

Not automatic, but can at least be hooked up in a emergency.

I'm looking at orderinng VorTech Battery Back-ups. I just changed to mp40 on my 90g and going to start a new 45g cube build and use my mp10s and get one for thgat tank also. So hpefully they will be good if power goes out. They don't last for days but says up to 30 hours.
