I agree with Salty on the reasoning and it has proven true in my systems.

Heh, I didn't even want to argue it, everyone has to do their own thing.  This is the longest I've had a tank without a crash (10 years in Nov) and I'll never do anything but a DSB (and GFO!!). :)

The last time I had a CRASH OF AGES I listened to someone online that convinced me that the sandbed was the source of all my HA problems, and that I should slowly get rid of it.  Well slowly for me at the time was Tony-speed, and I siphoned it all out over one week.  BOOM came the crash hammer.  Now I just leave things alone and get rid of the phosphates....all is good in Salty's cracker (knock on wood).  :)
