I just bought an apex and want to run 2 different tanks. The problem is, they are not beside each other and I need a 50 foot cable. I was wondering if I can use a standard USB cable or do I have to use the neptune cables? Also should I up date the firmware ? Can some of the more experienced hobbiest help me pls. Thanks

I used a regular usb cable to run the 50 ft to my display from my sump... works fine.

Might as well update the firmware while it isn't controlling anything :)

do not do it wirelessly... plug it into the router. follow the direstions on the website:)

So long as it is a straight through USB cable, not a cross over cable, you will be good. I ordered mine from somewhere...will have to back track my emails.

+1000 do not upgrade via wireless, always connect via ethernet to your router before updating firmware. Then ALWAYS clear out your cookies and cache after updating the webpated.

+1 to both statements. If you use a cross over you risk frying to USB port/possibly more.
