400 De Pendant

After rummaging through my bins of Various Reef equipment. The stuff you just can't get rid of, I came across My 400 MH DE Pendant and Ballast. The wheels started turning and Since I'm not paying the Hydro at my new place ( All Inclusive ) I thought why not build a tank around this light.

This Set-up has never been used I bought it Ions ago for a 90 Cube and didn't get the tank for some unknown reason. I know 400 watts is great for tanks in excess of 24 deep. But what about the spread on it? This DE Bulb is 8 inches long and the Pendant is 14 inches long. I know a standard 250 HQI is 24 X 24 Spread. What do you think this would be.

Is the bulb mounted horizontal or vertical in the pendant?

Ime the pendants usually give a decent spread over a 18"x18" space. Unless you have the height to raise it enough to spread 24"X24".

It's Vertical, The Reflector is 14 x 9, So if I raise the Pendant because I'd like to have DSB 6 to 8 inches, I'd like to put it over a 40 Breeder. That doesn't sound right, does it?

That's a ton of light spillage. Any Suggestions

You should be able to make it work.
However, if you want it to cover end to end (36"). You're going to have to have the pendant raised pretty high and might experience a lot of spill over light front to back.

You might just have to set it up and just play with the height till you're satisfied with coverage vs spill over.

are you going to use t5 bulbs also? you can do as i did and use the t5s and angle them on either side to "shield" the spillage sort of a wide /\ idea

speaking as a landlord my self all inclusive doesn't cover halide lights wich odviously use a tons of power if the land lord is watching the bill they prob wont be happy. LOL not trying to get any one mad just thought I would throw that out there and also large fish tanks are tough in rentals as well because of the damage a flood would cause

Eric, Doesn't sound like a viable option for it, I've also got my Geismann Reflexx T-5 36 inch Fixture which might be a better choice.

That might be a better option for the size tank you're looking at.
400w mh on a 40 breeder would be awesome. But a bit overkill

I'm always thinking, Always keeping my eyes open for the next build, I really miss not having a tank. I might start up a sump and Fuge before I get the tank. Something to keep an eye on.

I once knew a guy who had a big ass Sump, set-up for years and had a little 20 gl tank for Frags. He sold the Frags to put himself through school but the sump was amazing, Like 100 gl and set-up for years.

I had 300 gallons running in my old apartment years ago.

If the tank is 34 cubed then the one light will sort of spotlight the centre. You can do lower light stuff to the sides. And if you ran the lights from 2 in the afternoon till 10pm the hydro would be less.

I would have a chat with the landlord to get a lower rent because you will email him a photo once a week

Thanks, that's a good idea. I really don't think they'd even notice.there's 60 Apt with no individual meters
