Is there any kind of vacuum that you can use as to suck debris off the sand and while I Turkey baste the rock ..I do have one that has the long tube and the hose but once you start it's full blast goin at it. I'd like to stop and then Turkey baste and then start sucking the debris as I go and stop ...

There used to be a vacuum on the market by Hagen, if I remember correctly, that was battery powered and would push the water through a filter sock, returning the water to the display. It was a very compact device that would be perfect to allow you to clean at your leisure without having to worry about draining too much water from the display. I never owned it but I do remember selling it in my days as a BA sales rep.

A few options are listed here:

Honestly I rarely vacuum my gravel, but when I do, I run the hose into a fine filter sock in my sump just recirculating the water.

I've overflowed too many buckets concentrating on the vacuum!!!

This thread got me thinking... So I attached some extra hose and a gravel vaccum to a Rena XP 3 that I had down in the archives.....

I think I've found a new toy!!!!
